Final Tests to Determine Winners in Syrian Science Olympiad Start
Damascus, (SANA)_The final scientific tests of the Syrian Science Olympiad, intended to determine the winners on the national level in Math, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics kicked off at Dama Rose Hotel in Damascus on Monday.
Minister of Education, Hazwan al-Wazz, said the tests are the fruit of great efforts by the instructors at the Ministry of Education, in cooperation with the Revolution Youth Union and the National Commission of the Syrian Science Olympiad.
”The excellent students are a real national asset and a nucleus for building Syria…The Olympiad sends an unequivocal message to the enemies of Syria that the Syrian people are unbowed by terrorism,” said the minister.
He highlighted the importance of establishing an educational measurement and evaluation center, as well as upgrading curricula to keep pace with scientific developments.
Saleh al-Rashed, Chairman of the National Youth Union, highlighted the care accorded to the Olympiad through the preparations and efforts exerted ahead of organizing it, indicating that participation at the Olympiad lays the groundwork for an important stage on the level of the international scientific Olympiad.
Al-Rashed said that the Union encourages young students to be interested in basic sciences which underpin any scientific or cultural development, adding that the students who couldn’t make it to the tests due to the security conditions in some provinces were tested via the Internet and the Virtual University.
Imad al-Azab, Chairman of the National Commission of the Olympiad, said that the final stage of finals on the national level witnessed the participation of 293 youths from all specializations, adding that the Commission will pick the first ten winners in each specialization to be honored Tuesday morning at al-Assad National Library.
”After honoring the first winners, the Commission will pick the students who are to take part at the world Olympiads, as the first six students who come ahead in each specialization will take part in the International Olympiad in Informatics in Sydney, Australia,” he said, adding that the Commission will take part in the Olympics in Denmark, Russia and Columbia.
Most of the students agreed on the toughness of the questions and the fervent competition among the participants. Mo’tassem al-Hussien, a participant from Sweida, said that competition was fierce due to the fact that the Olympiad brought together students from all provinces.
Alaa Ismail, from Tartous, said that the Olympiad presented an opportunity for students to show their talents and capabilities.
