Electricity Minister Imad Khamis said that electric power will be restored fully in the southern region by Tuesday morning at the most.
Power was cut off in the southern region after an attack by armed terrorist groups on high tension power lines on Sunday night.
In a press conference on Monday, Minister Khamis said that the terrorist attack targeted a power line which stabilizes the electric grid and the generators and transforms which feed the southern region, adding that the attack also caused malfunctions in generators and transformers and some high tension power lines, which caused a total blackout in the southern region.
He asserted that work is underway to repair the damages and malfunction, particularly the damage done to the targeted power line which will be fully repaired within the next few hours.
Khamis added that terrorists attacked another high tension power line which feeds the southern region four days ago, and two days ago attacked a 400 kV power line.
He pointed out that power is being restored gradually in the southern region as generators are being restarted, a process which takes between an hour and ten hours depending on the type, capacity and design of the generators.
The Minister concluded by saying that such attacks that target citizens’ livelihoods will not dissuade workers at the Ministry from confronting challenges and difficulties to restore electric power to its normal state.
