Damascus bombing was a war crime, Brahimi says

UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has condemned the recent bomb attack in Damascus and described it as a “war crime.”

In a statement issued on Friday, Brahimi said he “strongly condemns the savage and horrible explosion in Damascus yesterday, which resulted in the killing of around 100 and the injuring of two hundred and fifty civilians. Nothing could justify such horrible actions that amount to war crimes under international law.”

Syria has asked the United Nations to issue a clear condemnation of the bombing in the Syrian capital.

In letters to the UN secretary general and the chairman of the UN Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said the Security Council’s adoption of a firm stance on the deadly attack would send a message to terrorist groups and those who support them.

“But if the UNSC turns a blind eye to this terrorist act, just as it did previously, it will deepen doubts about its seriousness in combating terrorism and its commitment to implementing its resolutions in this regard,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry added.

Last month, Brahimi asked the UN Security Council to establish an international body to conduct an independent investigation on war crimes in Syria.

The Syria crisis began in March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the violence.

The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants are foreign nationals.

As a reminder: Obama signed a secret order authorizing U.S. support for Syrian terrorists seeking to depose Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government. Obama’s order, approved earlier this year and known as an intelligence “finding,” broadly permits the CIA and other U.S. agencies to provide support that could help the terrorists oust Assad. C.I.A. officers are operating secretly in southern Turkey. The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The United States is setting up joint military, intelligence and medical working teams with Israel, Turkey and Jordan.

Role of Israel: to destabilise and weaken Syria

President Assad said that Israeli raid on a scientific research center in Jamraya in Damascus countryside “unmasked the true role Israel is playing, in collaboration with foreign enemy forces and their agents on Syrian soil, to destabilise and weaken Syria”…

President al-Assad: Israeli Aggression Reveals Israel’s Role in Destabilizing Syria

    February 3, 2013

President Bashar al-Assad said that the Israeli aggression on a scientific research center in Jamraya in Damascus countryside reveals Israel’s role, in collaboration with the hostile foreign powers and their tools in Syria, to destabilize and weaken Syria so as to force it to give up its national and Pan-Arab stances and principles .

Receiving Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Saeed Jalili on Sunday, President al-Assad stressed that Syria is capable of confronting current challenges and repelling any aggression targeting the Syrian people and their historic and cultural role, thanks to the awareness of the Syrians, the might of the Syrian army and Syria’s adherence to the path of resistance.

Jalili expressed trust in the wisdom of the Syrian leadership in dealing with the aggression that targets Syria’s pioneering role, stressing Iran’s full support to the Syrian people in confronting the Zionist entity and its keenness on continuing coordination with Syria for confronting external conspiracies and schemes that aim to destabilize the region.

Jalili conveyed Iran’s appreciation for the political solution plan for solving the crisis announced by President al-Assad and the Syrian government’s steps to implement it, reiterating Tehran’s readiness to offer all help needed for making the national dialogue a success as it is the only way out of the crisis.

The two sides also discussed the outstanding cooperation relations between Syria and Iran and the two leaderships’ mutual keenness on further enhancing them in all fields.

The meeting discussed the situation in the region in general and Syria in particular, especially in the aftermath of the blatant Israeli aggression on Jamraya scientific center in Damascus Countryside.

In a relevant context, Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Walid al-Moallem held a meeting with Jalili, in which al-Moallem stressed that the Israeli aggression on Syria proves its direct complicity with the armed terrorist groups to destroy the infrastructure and sabotage development centers in Syria.

He added that the consistency of roles between Israel and these terrorist groups stresses Israel’s hostility and violation of the rules of the international law.

In turn, Jalili condemned the Israeli raid on Syria, considering it as a proof on Israel’s aggressive nature and its being a threat to the security and stability in the region.

Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad, Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Ahmad Arnous, Director of Asia Department at the Ministry , the Iranian Ambassador in Damascus and the delegation accompanying Jalili attended the meeting.

    Feb 23, 2013

Global Research: Washington Backs Syrian Anti-Government Terrorism

    February 23, 2013

Global Research Website stressed on Saturday that the crisis in Syria was and still is a war planned by the USA as “Washington tolerates no independent government. It demands subservience to US policies. Outliers are targeted for removal. Options include war.”

In an article titled ” Washington Backs Syrian Anti-Government Terrorism”, the website cited the tools that might be used by the US to carry out its plans, ” Mass slaughter and destruction don’t matter. Unchallenged dominance is policy. It’s longstanding, ruthless and lawless.”

” Western-recruited death squads ravage Syria. They’ve done so for two years. They’re imported from abroad. Rules of engagement include mass murder, torture, and other atrocities,” the website added.

It stressed that” Syria was peaceful before US proxies invaded. So was Libya in 2011. It was ravaged and destroyed. It remains unstable and violent.”

The website held U.S. President Barack Obama fully responsible for the war in Syria, describing him as “a war criminal multiple times over,” with “Cutthroat killers are used. They’re recruited abroad. They’re heavily armed, trained, funded and directed. They’re ordered to commit mass murder.”
