Israel’s ‘Two State Solution’: Ethnic cleansing of Palestine

Image

Since 2001, Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs and leader of Israel’s far right party, Avigdor Lieberman, proposes to establish four townships in the occupied West Bank, hermetically sealed, which would be grouped the Palestinians. He sees it as a solution for the Palestinian citizens of Israel, who are more than one million, to move the vast majority of the group in tightly closed, self-administered areas.
Thus would arise a State ethnically homogeneous from the Mediterranean Sea until the Jordan, sheltering in its midst Palestinian “Bantustans”.

1) On November 15, 2010, U.S. President Barack Obama praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for urging his cabinet to accept a U.S. proposal to extend a freeze on West Bank settlement building for 90 days. Under the plan, Washington would block UN resolutions critical of Israel, and supply Israel with fighter jets worth $3 billion. The US government also promised Israel that after the 90-day moratorium, they would not seek an extension, and settlement construction in the West Bank and East Jerusalem (all of which is illegal under international law) could continue unabated.

2) In February 2011, more than 100 nations voted for a U.N. resolution that would have condemned illegal Israeli settlements and halted anynew construction. The United States vetoed it.

3) On February 19, 2011, Israel said it was deeply grateful to the United States after it vetoed a United Nations resolution put forward by the Palestinian leadership condemning Israeli settlement activity.

4) Oktober 2011: Israeli jets bomb Gaza Strip – Israeli jetfighters engage in aerial bombing of the Palestinian city of Khan Yunes in the Gaza Strip.

I am working for the Belgian human rights association 'Werkgroep Morkhoven' which revealed the Zandvoort childporn case (88.539 victims). The case was covered up by the authorities. During the past years I have been really shocked by the way the rich countries of the western empire want to rule the world. The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine is a book about the 1948 Palestinian exodus authored by Ilan Pappé and published in 2006 by Oneworld Publications.

Ilan Pappé is one of the New Historians. He seeks through his book to prove that a planned ethnic cleansing of Palestinian Arabs occurred during the 1948 Palestine War, or as he puts it in the preface of this book:
‘In other words, I want to make the case for the paradigm of ethnic cleansing and use it to replace the paradigm of war as the basis for the scholarly research of, and public debate about, 1948’.

He considers that this objective was implemented by the Zionist movement leaders, mainly David Ben-Gurion and the other ten members of his “consultancy group” as referred to by Pappé, and that the forced move of Palestanians to the Arab World was an objective of the Zionist movement, and a must for the desired character of the Jewish State.

The book says that this planned ethnic cleansing was put into effect through systematic destruction of about 500 Arab villages, as well as several terrorist attacks executed mainly by members of the Haganah and the Irgun.

Ethnic cleansing (compare Serbo-Croatian etničko čišćenje) is a euphemism describing the process or policy of eliminating unwanted ethnic or religious groups by deportation, forcible displacement, mass murder, or by threats of such acts, with the intent of creating a territory inhabited by people of a homogeneous or pure ethnicity, religion, culture, and history.

Ethnic cleansing usually involves attempts to remove physical and cultural evidence of the targeted group in the territory through the destruction of homes, social centers, farms, and infrastructure, and by the desecration of monuments, cemeteries, and places of worship.

The crimes committed during an ethnic cleansing is similar to that of genocide, but while genocide includes complete extermination of the target group as the stated goal, ethnic cleansing may involve murder only to the point of mobilizing the target group out of the territory.

Hence there may be varied degrees of mass murder in an ethnic cleansing, often subsiding when the target group appears to be leaving the desired territory, while during genocide the mass murder is ubiquitous and constant throughout the process, continuing even while the target group tries to flee.

The term ethnic cleansing gained widespread acceptance by the 1990s in academic discourse; despite originally being used by the perpetrators during the Yugoslav Wars, scholars now commonly use it to refer to “the systematic and violent removal of undesired ethnic groups from a given territory.”

An earlier draft by the Commission of Experts defined ethnic cleansing as “the planned deliberate removal from a specific territory, persons of a particular ethnic group, by force or intimidation, in order to render that area ethnically homogenous.”
It based this definition on “the many reports describing the policy and practices conducted in the former Yugoslavia, ‘ethnic cleansing’ has been carried out by means of murder, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, extra-judicial executions, rape and sexual assaults, confinement of civilian population in ghetto areas, forcible removal, displacement and deportation of civilian population, deliberate military attacks or threats of attacks on civilians and civilian areas, and wanton destruction of property.
Those practices constitute crimes against humanity and can be assimilated to specific war crimes.
Furthermore, such acts could also fall within the meaning of the Genocide Convention”.

Ethnic cleansing is not to be confused with genocide; however, academic discourse considers both as existing in a spectrum of assaults on nations or religio-ethnic groups.
Ethnic cleansing is similar to forced deportation or population transfer whereas genocide is the intentional murder of part or all of a particular ethnic, religious, or national group.
The idea in ethnic cleansing is “to get people to move, and the means used to this end range from the legal to the semi-legal.”
Some academics consider genocide as a subset of “murderous ethnic cleansing.”
Thus, these concepts are different, but related, “literally and figuratively, ethnic cleansing bleeds into genocide, as mass murder is committed in order to rid the land of a people.”

    ‘Two-state solution’

The two-state solution refers to the solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict currently under discussion, which calls for “two states for two peoples”. The two-state solution envisages the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside the State of Israel in the territory of the former British Mandate of Palestine.
