Mass censorship over Syria: Facebook

Sep 8, 2013

Apparently, it’s somehow against Facebook’s policy to speak out against illegal wars of aggression.

Anti-Media, who helps plan “No War With Syria” rallies, and contains posts that speak out against the United States’ proposed military operations in Syria, is now being censored.

Two reports from users confirming problems with both commenting and even “liking” anything on the page were reported to the page’s administrator, Nick Bernabe. Evidence was also presented showing that posts mentioning Syria were “restricted in their reach”, meaning the posts weren’t showing up on any of the fans’ news feeds.

I am working for the Belgian human rights association 'Werkgroep Morkhoven' which revealed the Zandvoort childporn case (88.539 victims). The case was covered up by the authorities. During the past years I have been really shocked by the way the rich countries of the western empire want to rule the world. Posts about No War With Syria rallies being censored by Facebook on major pages…

Posts speaking out against the United States’ proposed military operation in Syria are being censored on the Anti-Media’s Facebook page.

Nick Bernabe, the administrator of the page, provided two reports from users confirming problems interacting with the page as well as evidence showing that posts mentioning the war in Syria were restricted in their reach.

This is the same page responsible for heavily promoting the “No War With Syria” rallies. While the majority of the people of the United States continue to oppose an attack on Syria, according to the latest poll, the Obama administration continues to push Congress to authorize a strike.

Unfortunately, that ugly possibility is becoming increasingly realistic with the Senate approving a draft resolution to use U.S. military force in Syria.

One user reported that they were unable to comment or like any of the page’s posts.

“Is Facebook preventing me from spreading your posts?” they asked.

Later, another user reported that when they attempted to like some of the posts, their likes would be removed within 15 seconds.

“This happens no matter how many times I like something!” she said.

The most striking evidence of all is that when the same image gained some 10,000 additional views when it did not include text that mentioned the war in Syria.

If you have experienced something similar, please leave a comment or report it to the page’s administrators. If you run a page and have experienced something similar and can provide evidence, please contact me.

CNN’s bizarre censorship of reader comments at article about Syria!

    2013/8/31

… This begin yesterday evening at my Timeglass Pulsar Impulse blog…
Breaking News on CNN: 300 US Marines Arrive for Syria

I’ll repeat some of it here…

I was about to get an early start on this Labor Day holiday weekend by watching a movie on TCM at 4:30pm CT. I’d been checking CNN and FOX for updates on the ongoing Syria story. I was on CNN as I was about to switch to TCM, when the red line at the bottom of the screen for Breaking News announced “300 Marines arrive aboard USS San Antonio in East Mediterranean Sea off shore of Syria.” That appeared to be a direct contradiction to “President Obama said today any U.S. response to Syria’s chemical arms attack would not involve sending U.S. troops.” Also, Breaking News just posted at the CNN website about an hour earlier under the title “No Boots on Ground in Syria” which jumps to an updated article under the different title of “‘War-weary’ Obama says Syria chemical attack requires response.” People on CNN were not talking about the arrival of troops. It was only announced in the red line of Breaking News at the bottom of the screen.

I checked for other news sources and did not find any others reporting the event, which was very odd. Also, I didn’t find a news story about it posted at the CNN website. What I did find, at first, was hundreds of Comments just posted by others who had also just seen the Breaking News displayed on CNN on TV, who were posting comments about it under the article about Obama’s claim of no boots on ground in Syria, and that he would not send troops to that area.

SUDDENLY, the moderator at the CNN website began deleting all Comments about the arrival of the USS San Antonio with 300 Marines aboard, in the East Mediterranean Sea near the shore of Syria. My comment about it was also deleted. Then when I tried to post again, the CNN website moderator blocked me from posting any further comments about any subject at any CNN article!

A few people commented about the bizarre and unprecedented censorship, and their comments were not deleted. Here are 4 of them…

“Warning! The Communist News Network is deleting popular comments again. (Well popular with readers, but not popular with their state run agenda) …”

“CNN sucks worst than Miley’s performance. You deleted many legit comments. Closed threads on hot topics. Thumbs down on CNN! CNN are clowns.C N N = Clown News Network.”

“They deleted the top comment from the military vet who objected to bombing Syria! Over 1200 likes the last time I looked, and it’s just GONE. I cannot believe I am watching the propaganda machine, right in front of my face. Insane.”

“I was going to take a screenshot of it too, because I knew CNN wouldn’t let an opposing (popular) opinion stand. Shame on CNN for silencing someone who risked their life for our very freedom.”

I’ve never seen that done at any major news website. Considering the news media’s strong belief in Freedom of the Press and Freedom of Speech, being opposed to any unreasonable censorship, this is bizarre, unacceptable, and unprecedented.

Further, it was as if the right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing at CNN. By that, I mean, as Comments were being deleted by the moderator at the CNN website, CNN on TV continued to display the red line of Breaking News about the arrival of the USS San Antonio with 300 Marines. It was at least an hour, nearly 2 hours, until CNN removed that subject from Breaking News displayed on TV. Then CNN on TV also switched from covering Syria to covering mostly what I refer to as holiday and weekend fluff news for family viewing, which usually does not happen that early on a Friday night. However, CNN has been changing its programming during the past few months, and especially since the end of the Zimmerman trial coverage, as well as regular coverage about Edward Snowden. Actually, I quit liking CNN about the time it started covering the NSA and Snowden story, as well as the Zimmerman trial. It is as if CNN is trying to create the news and/or then fan the flames of hot topics to get more viewers. I found the coverage on FOX to be much more acceptable. Perhaps I need not mention MSNBC, which I believe has become Obama’s fantasy news network.

[I should mention here now that I’m registered as an Independent voter, not a member of any political party. I only “average out” to be a “Centrist” in the political middle by agreeing with liberal Democrats on some issues while agreeing with conservative Republicans on a near equal number of issues. Take the World’s Smallest Political Quiz to find out where you are on the political spectrum. I already know most readers of my political articles are Libertarians, if not Centrists. It may be described that my liberal mind is anchored in science fiction and fantasy as a science fiction author, while my conservative mind is anchored in science and reality as a political journalist. I’m very interested in political ideas in science fiction and religious ideas in science fiction. I’m especially interested in alternate history, time paradoxes, and time travel.]

Anyway, it appears CNN screwed up and released the report of a top secret military operation possibly leaked to CNN by someone in the government or in the military. Then it took CNN more time to remove the Breaking News line about it than it did to delete comments about it under an article at its website in which Obama claims just the opposite. Fact is, Obama lied. He has sent some troops to the region, although not yet [at the time of this posting] into Syria, so far as I know. 300 US Marines obviously are not for invading and winning a whole war, but could be the beginning of an invasion or being sent in for a special top secret mission. Also, they could be there for other reasons in the same region, if Syria isn’t their planned target.

USS San Antonio, 300 marines aboard. Here is the ship’s website http://www.san-antonio.navy.mil/ More information here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_San_Antonio_%28LPD-17%29 “The ship is designed to deliver up to 800 Marines ashore by landing craft and helicopters.”
