Head of the State Duma International Affairs’ Committee Alexei Pushkov thinks that not so much the Syrian opposition as its foreign patrons are interested in foiling the international conference on Syria.
“Nineteen Syrian opposition groups incapable of acting without foreign support rejected Geneva II, i.e. their sponsors want to foil it,” he twitted on Sunday.
The rejection of the offer to take part in Geneva II by 19 Syrian rebel groups was declared in a statement of Ahmed Eissa al-Sheikh, the leader of Suqour al-Sham brigade.
The statement says that participation in Geneva II will never be a choice of the Syrian people or their revolutionary demand and describes the international conference as “another conspiracy aimed at putting an end to the revolution.”
Anyone who will travel to the conference will be regarded as a traitor and duly punished, the leader of the Islamist brigade stated.
Geneva II is expected to be held at the end of November. The final date is to be announced by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
