Former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt is a fierce advocate for military intervention.
On July 1, 2009 he was elected President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group in the European Parliament.
In 2011, he pleaded in the European Parliament in a demagogic way for a multi-state military intervention in Libya (“The weak position of the EU makes me sick”).
In 2013, he pleaded in the European Parliament in a demagogic way for a military intervention in Syria ( “The time for peace talks is over, we need action now. If the UN doesn’t react, then NATO should”). At the same time he invited the so called Libyan opposition in the European Parliament and he promised them arms supplies.
Verhofstadt is a Board Member of the Brussels-based, Brussels-quoted Sofina holding (petroleum gas and oil platforms).
On September 11, 2012, the American diplomatic mission at Benghazi, in Libya, was attacked by a heavily armed group. Weapons they used during the attack included rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), hand grenades, AK-47 and FN F2000 NATO assault rifles, diesel canisters, mortars, and heavy machine guns and artillery mounted on gun trucks’.
The FN F2000 is a 5.56×45mm NATO bullpup assault rifle, designed by FN Herstal in Belgium and made its debut in March 2001 at the IDEX defence exhibition held in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.
